Eddy current retarder, electromagnetic

The Telma Retarder is an electro magnetic brake system also known as eddy current brake. The Telma is connected to the power train of the vehicle through the drive-shafts and when engaged slowing (retarding) the drive-shaft via an electro magnetic field which will cause the vehicle to decelerate.

Using the Telma Retarder, which is a frictionless brake system, you will not require to engage the service - or foundation brakes of the vehicle. The Telma does not create noise, nor wear or tear in any of the components. If the Telma is used via the integral foot control (direct via the brake-pedal) and/or with the comfortable hand-control the Telma is able to perform up to 90% of all brake applications.
The Telma system is also fully integrated with the vehicle brake system and safety features like ESP and ABS.

Depending on the slope, load and duration of the descent, the service brakes become very hot and quickly reach their physical limits (known as brake fading).
This means that the brake components wear down more and faster until complete destruction. This does not only apply to slopes but also "stop & go" traffic in cities and populated areas.
The retarder can also be required by legislation like for instance with people transportation which requires to comply with EC regulation Type IIa.
